“Please put your headphones on and do not take them off until the end of the show.
If you think that you have got enough information to continue – give me a sign.
Here is a battery that you will use when we enter the poorly lit space, where we will stay for 6 or 7 minutes.
If you begin to feel uneasy at any time, you can go back.
We would kindly ask you to leave your sound recording upon return.”

Instructions for the participants of Blackbox

recording 3

Before we entered the black box of the gallery, working with the lights on and moved by the motor of our thoughts about the performance that was taking place in the gloom of unfortunate events, we supposed that the knowledge of the system of “similarities” between us was obvious. Apparently it was not.
The black occurred when we sat down, Ones facing the Others, and opened up the box, the theatre box of our preliminary expectations. As if wiped away with a smile, the idea of an invented process was gone and we realized that the happening itself was displaced, taken out, and recorded outside of the performance.
We drank a few brandies and rushed into the beginning, almost like the knight of the dark curse.

That is how OOUR escaped all manipulation.
Music was guiding it,

and with a slice of orange in her hand, chewing H before the salon in the breathless limbo of the concert, without a sweet, acknowledged, created white box, Eva said:

OOUR is OK

Korištenje videa tijekom žive izvedbe / We’re Live: use of real time video in live performance

iz: Ivana Ivković, "Korištenje videa tijekom žive izvedbe", Frakcija - časopis za izvebene umjetnosti, #28-29, 2003., str. 111-119

Umjetnici često pokušavaju kontrolirati sve aspekte svog rada, uključujući i recepciju. Nove strategije, premještanjem fokusa s autora i izvođača na gledatelja i tehnički proces, uvode novu varijablu kontrole publike nad prostorom i pozicijom.
Orangecut problematizira upravo taj moment modifikacije zapisa, no spaja digitalni medij koji nema karakteristike videovrpce, s osobnim imputom sekundarnih izvođača kroz čiju manipulaciju primljenog materijala nastaje posredna živa izvedba.

We’re Live: use of real time video in live performance

from: Ivana Ivković, "Korištenje videa tijekom žive izvedbe", Frakcija Performing Arts Journal, #28-29, 2003, pp. 111-119

A synthesized, digitally enhanced image is no longer a representation of the real, but a simulation of pseudo-reality that exists only as virtual, as potential. This means that the synthesized image no longer refers to an event it depicts, but to its pure possibility/probability/virtuality.[1] The synthesized image is a de-realization of the world and a new creation of the real, the hyper-real. The perception of synthesized space is not founded on the process of memorizing locations in a space continuum, but on their tactical re-computation.
Artists often seek to control all aspects of their work, including reception. By dislocating the point of convergence from the author and performer(s) towards the spectator and the technical process, new strategies bring a new variable into play – the control over space and positions by the audience itself.
In today’s field of interactivity, artists frequently research on the very means of an interface that would allow for the integration of coherent spaces, an interrelation between the body and the machine. Peter Weibel draws a parallel between the interface and language in their inability of gaining immediate access to reality.[2] But the interface is precisely the medium through which we can analyze the ideological structures of reality today; and the first and foremost among these is the fact that it isn’t identical to itself.
orangecut by authors and performers Selma Banich, Sandra Banić (movement), Nenad Vukušić (video), and Adam Semijalac (music) deals with perception.[3] Two dancers perform a unison duet according to a previously designed and precise code and a programmed sequence of dance elements. Several cameras are recording the room that the performers inhabit. The live feed from these cameras is computer-manipulated by a third performer, who is located in another room and guided in his actions by his own impression of what he sees on his screen. The result of his work is projected onto a wall. While watching the projection, the fourth performer, led by his impression of the visual material, adds a sonic background. The audience is free to move between the two rooms, where they have an unobstructed view both of the two bodies in motion and the mediated scene of modified audio/visual material.
The concept of orangecut asks the question of what is the master, the original, and what the first or second (perceptual) copy of a performance.[4] Philip Auslander has quoted Peggy Phelan in stating that performance’s being becomes itself through disappearance,[5] but also referred to the deteriorating quality of magnetic tape, its “disappearance” with every reproduction. Of course, we notice this only when the quality of the recorded material becomes so poor that the deterioration becomes obvious to the ear/eye. The notions of master and copy are disappearing in the age of digital reproducibility. orangecut examines that exact moment of the recording’s modification by blending the digital medium that doesn’t share the magnetic tape’s characteristics with the personal input of secondary performers, whose manipulation of the received material produces a mediated live performance.
The theory of communication by Michel Serres regards the interruption in communication, or noise, as privileged over information, and introduces as a key moment the reconfiguration of the dialogue to include the third element of intergeneration. The dialogue thus becomes a struggle to preclude the Third. [6]
Noise – not just as part of the body of the message, but also as a means of transmission, often omitted in contemplation, is still, together with the transmitter and the recipient, an essential third element in the communication structure. Its characteristic is the deconstruction and restructuring of the code. Although noise can be regarded as interference by the transmitter, for the recipient it becomes an inseparable part of the message. The audience in the projection room, not the one where the dancers are moving, is aware of the liveness of the performance, although its experience of the dance material is gained only from its digitally modified form.
It is interesting to reflect on the characteristics of different interfaces – the one used by the secondary performer working on the video feed, and the one used to present the result of his work to the audience. The screen is a catalyst, it introduces the tangible difference between the conveyor of the projection and the conveyor of the work.[7] Contrary to that, the projection of visual material onto a surface located somewhere in space manages to transform it instantly into a performance space. This can be felt when one production is seen in a version that employs projection, and another that uses (often because of the impossibility of procuring a projector) a screen that, in that case, starts to resemble a stage prop, unlike the seemingly live backdrop of the projection.
First performed in a gallery context, in front of an audience that moved from one “exhibit” to the other,[8] orangecut is in line with today's tendency of showing art by disclosing the process of its making and not (just) the artifact itself.[9]
The displacement of an immediate view of the performers into the sphere of the virtual through the use of a digital interface can be interpreted as a kind of “transmission disruption” of strictly encoded dance sequences. The preference for audio-visual “noise” over the immediate view of the performers illustrates today’s tendency of mediatizing the performance, a tendency that orangecut displays as well.

[3] The working title stresses the use of color to mark the emotional experience of the seen and the use of editing video and audio material. The choreography’s accompanying text lists only the two dancers as the performers, but I wish to emphasize the impact of two collaborators who produced the video and audio output that is, together with the unobstructed view of the dancers’ bodies, one of the ways of experiencing the performance.

[6] Michel Serres has analyzed noise as a third, empiric element of the message. In ideal conditions, communication is separate from noise. Noise is not the communicated message, but exists as a chaotic element. Any formalization, mathematics for example, is based on the exclusion of the third element – noise.
